What is structured data?

Also called schema markup, JSON-LD.

In short

Structured data is machine-readable information about a page, usually written as JSON-LD using schema.org types, that tells search engines and assistants what the page is: an article, a product, an organization and so on.

Useful types include Organization for the publisher, Article with an author and dates for articles, and Product or SoftwareApplication for things you sell. Structured data has to match what's visible on the page.

Google's guidance is that AI features don't need special schema; standard structured data helps Google understand pages for all of Search.
