No. Blocking AI training crawlers, including Google's own Google-Extended token, doesn't change your Google rankings, and it doesn't remove you from AI Overviews or AI Mode. Only blocking Googlebot does that, and that removes you from Google Search altogether.
What Google-Extended controls#
Google-Extended isn't a separate crawler. It's a name you can use in robots.txt to tell Google not to use your content for training its Gemini models. Googlebot still crawls the page for Search, and the page can still rank and appear in AI Overviews.

How AI Overviews pick pages#
AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on the same index as regular results. Google's guidance is that normal SEO is what gets content into them: a crawlable, indexable page that answers the question well. There's no separate AI crawler to allow and, by Google's own guide, no special markup or llms.txt file required.
Limiting what Google quotes#
If you want a page to rank but not be quoted, robots.txt is the wrong tool. Use snippet controls instead:
<meta name="robots" content="nosnippet">stops Google showing any text from the page.data-nosnippeton an element keeps just that section out of snippets.max-snippet:50caps how much text can be quoted.
These apply to AI features as well as classic snippets, so they cost visibility everywhere. Use them on specific pages, not site-wide. The checker flags nosnippet rules, because they're often left in by accident.
Questions
Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?
No. AI Overviews and AI Mode are built from Google's normal search index, which Googlebot crawls. Google-Extended controls use for Gemini training.
Does blocking GPTBot or ClaudeBot affect Google?
No. Google doesn't read other companies' robots.txt groups. Only rules for Googlebot, or for all user agents, affect Google Search.
How do I keep a page out of AI Overviews but in normal results?
Use snippet controls such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet on specific sections, or max-snippet. They limit what Google can quote, in classic results as well as AI features.
